Ionic Air Purifiers

Friday, September 14th, 2007

Ionic air purifier systems filter the air using charged electrical surfaces to generate electrically charged ions. As airborne particles pass through the air purifier these ions attach to them and then become electrostatically drawn to a charged collection plate.

Ionic air purifiers come in two basic varieties: fanless and fan driven. Fanless versions use less power and run silently, but are less efficient than fan driven alternatives.

Ionic air purification systems create ozone and other oxidants as a by-product. Read the manufacturers label very carefully to ensure that the unit you purchase emits acceptable levels of ozone. 0.05 ppm of ozone is the industrial safety standard level that most manufacturers target, but try to find a unit with the lowest number possible.

People suffering from asthma should be particularly cautious as ozone can be a trigger for attacks.
